Hailing from Longford Town until 1981, I saw Horslips as many times as possible, and after another incredible gig in the Sunset Club which was part of the Longford Arms Hotel, Johnny personally taught me the Dearg Doom lick. Even though it was about 3am, he sat with me for about half an hour showing me the notes, and letting me try them on his Les Paul Gold Top with the soapbar pickups. It is one of the great memories of my youth, and even though I thanked him on the night, I just wanted to say Thanks again to one of life's real gentlemen, Johnny Fean.

"KING OF THE LEICESTER RUGBY FANS" - Check to see if there's been an increase in research on Horslips from Leicester, UK, Johnny. I'm bass player in the band 'Hard Drive' and we played the Leeson Lounge last weekend. Our second half opens with 'King of the Fairies' (your version) and 'Trouble'; well the punters went mad for it and asked lots of questions about this new phenomenon "Horslips". Gave us a giggle, so tjhought I'd share it with ya. Keep her lit Mr. Fean - Cheers Johnny - Mick.

There were a number of Irish Top Hat Ballrooms; The Top Hat Ballroom, Dun Laoghaire, The Top Hat Ballroom, Fermoy and, in London, The Top Hat, Northfields Avenue, West Ealing (a sister-ballroom to The National in Kilburn but now a church) were the best known Irish ballrooms with that name. The excellent RTE series "Campus Rock" was filmed at The Top Hat Ballroom, Dun Laoghaire in the early 80's.

Was born JUST to late to enjoy the splendour of the 'first time round' set of gigs in Red Island, Skerries in the 70's, but you and the boys inspired a lifetime of wanting to be like you lads. At last, I've aspired to finally get to play a "live" rendition of the below attachment. Hope you find it complements the original "masterpiece" Yours in Rock (Celtic) "Mick"

John, its been a while. Hope all is well. Heard the Belfast show and the ensemble photo said it all. Worth waiting for in all its symphonic glory. Was at the Point last month for our colleague EC, great 2 hour long set, Fender beige tweed no effects but leslie for Badge but a truly amazing accoustic set, no pick, with the cuticles as opposed to the fingernails. never knew he could do that! Included Still Got the Blues for You dedicated to Gary who from my tour with him (G knew the whole Blusebreakers album solos note for note) I know would have meant a lot. Have a new small Fender 15w great sounds. Best from the Big Smoke Dave

hi Johnny and Maggie,
Just got back from Ireland with the O2 DVD
WOW! It's fantastic. Ray fits in so well. The playing is better than ever. The sound is great. The guitar sound is the best since the Tain. You must be so pleased with the result.
However I didn't notice the obligatory ciggy between the strings but something strange stuck to the headstock. Was it a cam?
I really hope it keeps going. Any chance of new material in the future?
Happy new year from Ontario

Heartfelt support from across the Atlantic! Wish I could make the shows but distance and money keep me in America. Will keep checking youtube for performance snippets to watch until I can make a gig in Ireland (unless you all plan to play Los Angeles sometime in the future).

Oh - by any chance would there be any recordings (John Fean solo or as Fean and Travers) out there for sale somewhere - studio or live? We have all the Horslips CD's but would love to add other recordings you've done. Thank you much for all the wonderful music you've made over the years!

On my way back from the toilet on Saturday night, 'Call Me The Breeze' was being sung, a new number for Johnny's band.
But Johnny was'nt singing.
Neither was the new drummer, John Travis.

It was Steve.
Talk about hiding your light under a bushel ! !
How come bassist Steve has avoided letting us know about this other talent he undoubtedly has, an ability which is the perfect foil to Johnny's smoky blues vocals.

More, Steve, more!!.

Hi johnny, I really enjoyed your guitar page. i first heard Horslips when I was 17 in Clones about the time of "The unfortunate cup of Tea" I was stunned by your guitar playing as I loved Cream and I thought you were better than Clapton. I still do. The sound on "The Tain" is unique. Not like any other player. A very clean sound. What amps were you using and pedels. You told me it was a goldtop deluxe you were using. Is that the same one you were playing on stage before you started using the sunburst. Hi to Maggie, I met her in the Maddison a few years ago.

This is a heartfelt and sincere "thank you" to both Stephen and Gay Brazel for their attendance and participation at my late father's memorial tribute concert in Cashel Palace Hotel on Sunday 20th June. My late Dad (Billy D'Arcy) who died on 6th January this year, played bass guitar since 1971 in and around the Munster region in dixieland bands, big bands and stage musical orchestras. He was also a member of various dance bands in '50's and '60's (Jimmy Cawley, Mick Fogarty, Billy Kenrick) playing lead trumpet and sax. I'm so delighted to "find" this website and be able to publicly thank Stephen and Gay for coming yesterday. Secondly, it's also a real pleasure to see Johnny on the website ~ such a pity ye had to cancel the Marquee in Cork...Also, say hello to Ray on the drums Johnny ~ ask him about his days in "No Sweat" way back in 1987 !!! Thought they were the bees knees...and I still get out the tape some times now ~ just have to try to find a tape player !! Best of luck for the rest of 2010 lads. hope to see ye in Cork ?

I felt the same as you did seeing Mick Taylor when I first saw Horslips. It was in Clones I went on my motorbike I was about 17. The "unfortunate cup of tea" was the new album. I had seen Tiger Taylor and Eric bell up close and Jan Akkerman with Focus (still a favourite of mine) at the Stadium. But that night in clones was memorable. I went to England soon after and bought a gold top Les Paul. Still have it.

Happy Christmas to Johnny & Maggie, Steve and Blendi. We'll be thinking of Maureen. And like she would be, we'll be looking forward to Sunday in Crusheen!
Seasons greetings also to the riff (dah da dah da dah) raff - Blind Boy Goodwin, The Three Wise Men, Evil Ferris, Niall, Brendan, PJ, J Burns, Myles, Dave McG and the rest of the usual suspects.
It was great to finally meet those Mad Moylans, talk to Joe Forde, see Jez's NY bling. It was amazing to be on tour in Drogheda, Belfast and Dublin, to be having a quiet drink when some large (ahhemmmm) gentleman from Norn Iron would come up to you, glare and announce "I know who YEWIE RRRRRR"!

Best of all though was the music.
That fabulous, living, breathing music.

Johnny, for a sharp guy you really haven't got a clue - just how much it means to hear it and you again with those side men of yours.......
Thank you so much.
Friday December 25 13:23:06 2009 - Lee Glacier

..and a Happy Christmas from me to Johnny, Steve, Blendi and the fans out there. In the ups and downs of the year it was always uplifting to meet the usual crews at the different functions. Great too to met a few more folk in real life:- the Mad Moylans and Jez for starters.
Have a good one...

Hi Johnny, unbelievable gig at the O2 on Saturday night, it was an incredible evening, you and the rest of the Guy’s played an absolute storm. I’ve been to many, many gigs over the years, but for live rock music nothing could come close to Saturday night. A big hello to Steve, who I met at Thursday’s gig in the Odyssey. A very Special Thanks to Maggie, who as Stephen and PJ said below, is always looking after us, even despite how busy or how hectic things are. Best Wishes!!

It was simply the best gig I can ever remember attending Johnny. The whole band played out of their skins. Your own performance was awesome throughout, and by the end you were playing like a man possessed! It was that intense! Thank you so much for the pleasure you bring to us all in your music. Lovely to meet you and Maggie again too. Till the next time, best wishes. Joe

And this is for Johnny.
You were magnificent.
All the band were.
A night to savour in years to come.
Truth is, if I never see another Horslips gig, I could be quite content.
The greatest band in Ireland and their greatest performance.

Again, thanks to Maggie for always looking after us.
And keep well.

Again, very privileged indeed to be invited to second night of band rehearsals.
Have to say, these boys are going to have to work very hard at the official gigs in Belfast and Dublin to top the atmosphere and pure enjoyment the other night.
I am probably the most senior of the raucous squad of followers, and in all my years I have not enjoyed anything as much nor been so impressed with any group of musicians.

And Johnny hardly broke in to a sweat, and could have gone on for hours more.

They really do Drive The Cold Winter Away.

Very deaf this morning from standing too close to the thunderous speakers at last night's rehearsal in McHugh's, but just had to get right up there almost within touching distance.
Just to watch the Fean brothers in action, to see the interplay of band members and the superb musicianship was a privilege indeed.
In this instance Horslips are being more than generous to those of us able to make the venue, the full set of what appears to be nearly thirty songs played with verve and great enjoyment, plenty of exchanges between the crowd and band.
For middle aged gentlemen they did remarkably well, no prostate driven dashes to toilets for nearly two and a half hours (jam jars behind the drums ?)

But the years have been kind to them, and their music still manages a freshnes and vitality rarely found anywhere today.

And more to come tonight.

Johnny - saw the superb Steve Howe and Yes last night. he was using this electric guitar with six strings which could sound like a 12 string or an accoustic at the push of a button. No pickups either. Did some research and its our friends at Line 6 again - the Variax

Hi Johnny, yes its a 2x12 and its Loud. Can't imagine you without a Gibson though I do remember you playing a red (?) Strat when you were in the Zens.

I have played Squiers that were better than Fenders! Will look out for that 'classic vibe' model. Was in Waltons recently for the first time in ages and was surprised how great the guitar selection still is. I am sure they have plenty of Squiers there.

Do you remember the name of that effect/box you used on 'Sword of Light' which can be clearly heard at 1.49, 3.08, 3.28 and 4.40 on the new (re) remastered version on TBOI ?

Hi Dave... Thanks...Good to hear from you, I enjoyed the RDS masterclass with Anto,, hadn't played 'daydream' onstage since I was fifteen!, it's always been a favourite since '66...'..Lazybones' a great song also.....I will check out the new J. Bonamassa RAH dvd.
Good to hear you've been strattin' it in the studio with a deville hot rod, 2x12"?..no need for pedals there....
I've been doing a bit of strattin' myself with a blonde maple neck and sunburst rosewood neck Squier 'classic vibe' strat/s I bought a while back, nice guitars.
I will pass on your regards to all.
Best for now......Johnny.

Maestro, although I could not make it to the RDS I just saw the masterclass on YouTube. Very very enjoyable. Well done to you and Anto too. Funny, just bought 'Daydream' on itunes as I always loved it and 'Lazybones' when I was a small kid. Nice duets with Anto, speaking of which that Joe Bonamassa show I was at in May at the RAH is now out on DVD and inevitably on YouTube. Much better sound than at the show itself. Here's the same song with our hero

O an embarrasment of riches !! SIX Horlslips playing in Slatterys last Saturday night. Crowded venue, back to back, belly to belly. That extra Horslip...tall, darkly hamstrung, a young Buddy Holly in looks, witty, urbane, great guitarist, bringing that touch of Drogheda class so sadly missing from recent Horslips gigs.
Of course Johnny was only beginning to get into it when the rest of the old geezers called it a night and toddled off stage.

Hope they will be more rested up for their outing in Belfast shortly, zimmers on standby, meds all sorted, incontinence pads bought in bulk and stacked ready for use...

Has the O'Connor Don discovered the secret of eternal youth ? Not a grey hair in the head, warbling better than ever before !

'Jezabel' was there, first time in Ireland, first time meeting the band.

Best night in recent times with the Horslips gang, and it can only get better.

D I Dyahear
FEAN- DOWNEY – GOODWIN How many legends …

…. Can one night have.

Roll up, roll up
The Magical Mystery Gig

Yes indeed folks Blind Boy Goodwin is about to do it again.

On a number of stunning nights in Drogheda already this year the Holy Ghosts were augmented at various times by:
Legendary Wing(s)man & Woodstock performer - Henry McCullough
Wise Man - Paul Callaghan
Renowned jurist - Seamus Lockhart
Renaissance Man of the Ages - Barry (Airfix) Devlin
Ireland’s greatest guitarist and a man known to a few of you on these pages – Johnny Fean

Buoyed with the critical and commercial (?) success of the performances to date and inspired by the acclaim for a number of recent performances in the Home Of The ROTDS Jury
- Highfield RFC, Centre of the Universe –
Goodwin has been secretly organising the gig of the year (so far, you understand.....)

Next Friday September 4th in McHugh’s in Drogheda sees another performance by Blind Boy Goodwin & The Holy Ghosts.

The word on the street is a mixture of the confirmed and rumour.

CONFIRMED is that on this occasion those in McHugh’s are guaranteed that:

Goodwin is having his hair done especially for the occasion.

Col. Tomás Mac an tSamhraidh has indicated that Lockhart’s favourite mandolin playing behind his head, Les Paul wielding, five string bass strumming teenager – Seamus O Hendrix -will be sprung from supervised homework to provide rhythm and other services.

The Holy Ghosts rhythm section will by rock solid, anchored on the night by the fabulous and original Thin Lizzy stickman – Brian Downey

Oh yeah, - Johnny Fean………………………..

As for the rumours, ah sure if I gave ye the low down on them the queue to McHugh’s would be down past Cahir tomorrow morning.

As those of in the bowling community might say –“Bate that in two throws…..”

I was saddened to hear the recent news of the passing of the Great les Paul.

Were you serious about Spud reforming? I would like to see those lads playing live again. Great to see Johnny and Spud back together again for live gigs. If Johnny sings 'Wind in the Willows' in the O2, like he did back in the 30s, then the night will be a success.

Johnny, am delighted about the gigs, heard the interview on RTE yesterday as I drove to town and Ken tells me he met you later on. I was already in good form after seeing Jeff Beck the night before. Every axeman in the country seemed to be there except you - although I suppose you may have been there somewhere. A great show and that bass player is something else. Hi Steve, I will definitely try and get across. Is there a number for tickets?, or is it pay @ the door?
The guy's in my work have never believed that the 'All talk' band played the Glastobury festival, albeit it was the marquee's but nonetheless would you be kind enough to confirm this for me as they think that I am a bit of a Walter Mitty. LOL. Thought that you would like to know that I still play the stratocaster that I bought off 'Dave' I think his name was who was the guitarist with 'The Great Hunger' back in the early 90's. It is my main guitar and plays like a dream, it has definitely aged better than me. Gerry Brown was on keyboards with this line-up also. One last question - were can I get a copy of your book? Eason's in Derry maybe?
Regards
Shaun

A fantastic night, last Saturday in Drogheda and all credit to all the Musicians, as Niall said: there was too many “great moments” to mention but the version of “I’ll be waiting” by Johnny with Paddy (Guitar), Chris (Bass) and Jim on keyboards was brilliant and then the Finale, “With a Little Help from My Friends” with Henry on guitar and Eamon on drums just topped off a truly memorable night. A special Thanks to all.
Wednesday May 13 15:24:20 2009 - Newry

Niall
Unbelievable gig last night! Some amount of talent in one venue, Paddy Goodwin and all 500 members of The Holy Ghosts, Johnny, Jim, Eamon, Henry McCullough.
Too many great moments to mention, but the highlight had to be I'll Be Waiting. And a 3/5 Horslips gig, pure amazing! Great version of Mustang Sally and With A Little Help From My Friends. Henry can still play that song as well as he did back at Woodstock, but it sounds even better now with the addition of Johnny, Jim and Eamon. And speaking of Eamon, He thundered through the set like there was no tomorrow, have to find out what band he plays in on the side, because he hasn't lost it one bit! And despite attempting to start Amhrán na bhFiann at 2am, the night went on, and on.
And a post wouldn’t be a post without mentioning Johnny 5 strings. As always, a performance that can only be described as devine. He exsorcised whatever demons were in the room, and those demons left in the form of an E string.
But all in all, Just an amazing night. Can’t wait for the next one!

Regret missing Crusheen. As a consolation prize saw up and coming axeman Joe Bonamassa last night in London. Scintillating stuff as backed by a powerhouse band with two drummers Joe worked his way through an arsenal of axes including a vintage Goldtop. A highlight was the early appearance of Old Slowhand himself on sky blue maple neck strat for ..what else..Further On Up The Road. Licks and verses were traded but it still couldnt beat the F and T version a year ago in Leitrim when the call and response had to be heard to be believed. Best to all..;

I'm sorry we've haven't been keeping the web site up to date.
There are bits and pieces to to added around the site from last year. Hopefully we'll have some updates later on, but for now here are a few nice details.

Steve, Des Lee and Ray Millar, and have now completed their Joy to the World - Miami Showband Reunion Tour. Johnny Fean, Gerry Brown and Barry Woods completed the line up for that tour. Steve tells us that there'll will be more to come from the Miami, so keep an eye out for news.

In at the end of January Steve opened Redmond Herrity's new Exhibition in Letterkenny. Redmond was the sculpturer who was commisoned to produce the Miami Showband Permanent Memorial which is in Parnell Sq in Dublin. More info at the link for this message above!

More news is that Johnny is to perform at a special Night of Guitars: on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 New Grange Hotel Navan , also featuring Pat McManus and Bernie Marsden. For more info email handoverheartpromotions@gmail.com

Hi steve how's it going. I e-mailed you a while back about a band called the woodbines but as I only got into computers and e-mailing in the past few months and still learning about it i'm not sure if it sent properly. Their a midlands based band, very original, not just a celtic rock band but a celtic/trad/cajun/folk/rock with a little bit of a bluesy feel type band. 5 lads with an average of 20 years each gigging experiance coming from rock, punk rock, celtic rock, trad and country backgrounds with great musical influences and ideas who gel extreamly well together and have created, over the past 18 months, a very unique sound that goes down really with audiance's around the midlands. Definatly worth cheaking out @ www.Thewoodbines.com. P.S. Hope all's going well with the band and gigs, best wishs for Christmas an all the best for the New Year.

Johnny.
Hi Trudy..
It's very nice to hear from you, and to learn you have the same surname as me, and that your granddad was John Fean.....
Yes.. It is quite possible that I could be somewhat related to Patrick Fean who lived in Co. Limerick in the 1800's..
As it happens my Fathers (Jim Fean) family came from Co. Limerick..They lived in a place called Bruree, near Bruff in Co. Limerick.
So there could be a connection there (somewhere) back in those times, between Patrick Fean, and my great grandfather.
There is only one Fean family name in the whole of Ireland, (spelled Fean), and they originated in Co. Limerick.
so yes, quite possible....
I might look into the whole history of the Family someday...
Until then...
Best wishes....Johnny.

Dear Johnny, I lived on the streets of Limerick during the late 60s. I stood on the street corners playing an Autoharp and harmonica in a holder I have made a restart on my book about these days. I should very much like to get a few things correct. I remember you from Horslips but can't remember if you were in the Intensions. Two questions come to mind. 1, did one Mickey Fraser play in the Intentions. 2. Christmas 1966: The Intentions supported WHICH Dublin Band in WHICH hall in Limerick City Centre? Guido may well remember but I forgot to ask him last time I saw him. Since then I have lost contact to Johnny Duhan, Guido and Tony Keane, who was a roadie for The Intentions and went on to work with Horslips I believe If I could contact these lads, maybe they too could help.

Great Gig in Milltown Malbay on Wedensday night guys. What a great crowd, they sure know how to enjoy themselves on the old west coast and they certainly know a great band when they see one. Big hello to Mags. Good to see Steve back and also to see Dave there also. Hi Joohnny, got my eye on an old Framus banjo for the kid, do you know anything about them? Regards to all.

Sorry for the late message but thank you Johnny Blendi and Dave for a fantastic gig last week. Ye really brought that house down. Fair play to Dave Cronin who provided some excellent grooves on the night.

And a most sincere thank you for giving me the chance to get up for a couple of great numbers with some of the countries finest musicians as I pointed out on the night, subtlety was never my strong point!

What can I add to what's already been reported.. not much. It was an enourmeous pleasure to see everyone again and of course for me it was my first Johnny gig, so it was even more special. And the whole thing just felt like it was a private party.

I have created a photo album and the link is in the web page address..health warning it does go on a bit. I posted very poor quality videos too, I say don't bother :=)...Perhaps the couple of people there I saw filming did a better job and would care to share these ...

Hi Johnny, Blendi and Dave - just a word of thanks for the great gig in Ballinamore on Friday night, also terrific to see Barry and Jim take to the stage to do a fantastic version of Furniture. A big hello to Maggie and it was great meeting all the usual suspects, PJ, Niall, Niall’s Mum, Noel, Brendan and Steve. All credit to Jim Nelis, Paul Callaghan and Steve Ferris for putting together a truly amazing Horslips collection and well done to the South Leitrim Arts Group and the Solas Arts Gallery for hosting this wonderful Exhibition.

Best Wishes!!

What a night!!!!

Well done to the South Leitrim Arts Group and to the Solas Arts Gallery in Ballinamore. The exhibition looks mighty. Full marks to the 3 Wise Men, it’s georgous.
Although young Lockhart has a point. The more you see ALL the stuff and how fabulously it looks, presented in the different ways you do wonder how any of them still have partners at all…

Charlie McGettigan was brilliant and the man is a fairly mean guitar picker. I know this because not alone did my ears inform me, a fairly handy picker of my own acquaintance was explaining to his deaf relative about such stuff…

Only for the shaggin' Leaving Certificate myself and Tricia Bell would be still infesting that part of the world. Beautiful country and smashing people, it will get a re-visit for sure later in the year.

AND THE GIG

Smashing venue, incredible performances, pity about the rough element in the audience.
Aww go oonnnnnn, sure Jim 'twas yourself and Barry made the night. It was mighty to hear young Barry in such fine voice and Jim’s playing was fairly spot on indeed.
Well done to Dave Cronin on filling in for Dr. Travers. It was pleasant indeed to meet Highfield frequenters Paul & Margaret Callaghan and the redoubtable Rev. Good (are you getting this Noel…..).
It was equally good to meet again PJ, but where has he been hiding the lovely Carmel all these outings. There may well be a tribunal of enquiry!
Good also to meet Good & Evil Ferris – Stephan sorry to have missed you Saturday morning – Noel every time I see you dance it reminds my late mother, she was always talking about people with two left legs…..
Would somebody please give Frances Lockhart a HUGE kiss. And a hug.

Otherwise?
Well Johnny was absolutely on fire. Paddy Goodwin put it right, he says “sometimes during a number Johnny just kinda, leaves…..”
Last Friday I can honestly say he was gone off wherever he goes for most of the night.
That youngfella on the bass was pretty much on the money at the end.

Not just with his own playing.

Well folks, just back in from a rolllicking good time in Ballinamore. Our hero was in top form ably assisted by Blendi and Dave right in the pocket on bass Following the sensational location for the Pictures at an Exhibition - a flower shop, check it out! -we retired en masse to the Commercial Hotel for the most blueswailng evening from El Feano and co. If that wasnt enough 'Furnture' too with Lockhart sand Devlin. Only lowlight, a clearly inebriatied Sean Penn lookalike who crashed onsatge security to duet with our hero - on vocals - for Bobby Blue Bland's 'Further on Up the Navan Road' Not bad though. Same tulip seenn next day on street playing a black strat.

Hi Jez..Great to hear from you...
I first got to Hear Randy C. and Spirit in 1967, and the song I heard was called 'Fresh Garbage'....Great song.. w/a great guitar riff!...Probably my first exposure to a latin/jazz/rock song...very original...
So I was a fan of Spirit from then on.......
randy was a great guitarist/singer and I was lucky enough to meet and get to know him, when Horslips played at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go in L.A. in '78/'79...
I enjoyed talking to Mike about those days when i played with the Indulgers some time back....
Good memories from back then....
Hope you're keeping well...
Best wishes....
Johnny.

Hello Johnny - hope this note finds you and yours well and ready to enjoy the upcoming summer. Hopefully, I will be in Ireland for the soiree in August and I look forward to meeting you.

While browsing around the net today in search of various things pertaining to TMWBA, I came upon this post and was wondering if you remember it at all (the band Spirit.)

2008/01/16 at 18:00:49
"Hi,
Randy California casts a long shadow in my life as a singer.
For the past ten years I’ve worked stages and studios with Mike (Bunnell) Nile, long time Spirit bassist and studio engineer and songwriter.

We formed an Irish rock band shortly after Randy’s death. I didn’t know Randy but have met Ed a few times over the past decade.

We have no setlist because Randy didn’t have one and Mike followed suit as we went about the gigs. We bumped into many, many fans of the band over the years and recently while in Ireland found radio jocks fasinated by Mike’s time with Randy and Ed in Spirit. The legacy is still intact and widespread, a great thing in this modern throw it away world.

While in Ireland Johnny Fean of legendary Irish rockers, Horslips joined us for a few tunes at a gig, he knew Randy well and it was a big highlight on the tour to listen to Johnny and Mike talk about their close friend and days gone by."

Happy New Year
and keep up the great fodder for thought.

John, listening to the studio version of Badge this morning and, after 25 years, I notice for the first time that Jack's bass playing is amazing...you are right. Its nice when you notice something new about a song that you have been listening to for yonks. Like when I heard the feedback note in Hall of Mirrors. Had to confirm that with the Monster himself when he was working with Tears for Fears. Was he down in Tipp for the recording with the mobile? We also talked about how he panned the guitar for 'Sword of Light' at the Stadium - one of the memorable moments of my youth.

Which reminds me... very sad to hear of the death of the great John Earle who I knew from my Rats and Lizzy tours with the punk band. One night we dressed Dave Moloney our drummer up in one of John's jackets, painted on a moustache and he went on for Rat Trap leaving Boomtown Bob, for once, speechless...

I was lucky to also play with John several times in the last few years in the Fair City

Here is a great website about John for all of us who were lucky to know him

Johnny, the Les Paul GT is safe at home at Liffey Delta. I will bring in to one of your gigs sometime so you can see it. Its got the mini humbuckers but is the same colour as the one you used to use. Sometimes I think its a bit too easy to play so I use the strat to fire up the 'chops.' Speaking of EC, his book was a bit of a let down though his chum Ron Wood's is a great read. EC may have been a bit of a scoundrel but he sure can play the guitar as proved by the recent Madison Square Garden clips on You Tube when he really lets fly once more; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cPsskr9b

As yet there are no gigs planned for Dublin, but there should be some gigs coming up for the rest of Ireland over the next few weeks....

The Miami Showband in aid of Children in Crossfire
No other band has the history of The Miami Showband. During the 60's and 70's, hundreds of thousands of adoring fans packed the dance halls and concert venues throughout Ireland. The band more than any other embodied the music and style of the era.
Fate intervened in 1975, 'the day the music died' and the band became written into music and social folklore. A reunion concert in 2005 to a capacity audience in Vicar Street, Dublin created a clamour for more and three years later the original Miami members Steve Travers, Des Lee, Ray Millar and Paul Ashford joined by Gerry Brown and Johnny Fean are back. The legend lives on. Concert profits in aid of Children in Crossfire www.childrenincrossfire.org

Johnny, am listening to Trouble for the first time (Barry McCabes' one naturally), directly from his website, in waiting for his CD which is on its way to me. It was not very difficult to recognise the additional extraordinary guitar skills when hearing THAT solo. Hey it seems to me you just can't keep out of trouble ;=)

For those interested in Barry's CD

THE CD

Sorry I can't help myself trying to promote CD's..Must be since that Japanese release ;=).

Actually am supporting lots of new bands at the moment by buying their CD's. My flavours of the moment are Voodoo Loons, Mellow Drops, Jung Turks, really worth checking out. I am also waiting for the Indulgers. This is all because of that dangerous jukebox on this web site The Responsibles, they've had me ruined now with all these CD's I have been buying recently.....I'll have to renounce to my anti wrinkles creams for a wee while now :=).

Actually am just about to check out some other sounds which I have not yet investigated, such as Dae Kim and Simple Kid. For those who don't know that website yet, I highly recommend it, and this is coming from me, conservative, rarely buying new music. Honest am still buying Horslips Vinyls me.

About the big foot guitar, for all you know, they even spray it with smelly feet aromas...pouah...

Bon appetit everyone

Hello Johnny and Steve,

I have just got through in the post from Amazon a recently re-released CD of an album called 'Smoking on the Bog' by an Irish band called Spud which originally came out in 1977. I have to say that I have been impressed by this music and hear a lot of Fairport and some Horslips influences in there. A much better band than Mushroom for sure, but one which appears to have not got the historical recognition that perhaps they deserve and are about to get.

I originally saw them supporting Richard and Linda Thompson back in 1975 at the Birmingham Town Hall and remember them then as being a good outfit ( though, it has to be said, not in the league of Horslips as I recall). I am curious: did either of you know this band or get to play with them? Did Horslips ever gig with them?

Hope you two are well and best of luck with these summer Miami gigs Steve.

Kind regards

Joe

Peter,
After witnessing the events at Highfield, the quality of our parties has come under question. We shall have to double our efforts for the next one.
Again, it was great to be part of it and to see all those faces again: Yourselves, Johnny, Maggie, Steve, Jim, Callaghan's, Dave Creedon and of course The Holy Ghosts. Video footage available from your local back street shop, with a bonus track - Furniture.

On another topic, great gig last night. Johnny and Jim were on fire, and their support band weren't bad either. Hopefully there's more where that came from!

And Happy 18th Birthday to young Nelis, who is now of legal age for displaying Lips pics on her wall!

Johnny & Maggie, thank you so much for helping to make the Highfield Fixture such a blast. If I’d known that the crowd attending would be so fulsome in their praises of the music & craic I’d have doubled the charge on the door.…..
I must say that I learned a valuable lesson.
When holding a party it is a great help to have the country’s finest guitarist in the room, it sorta adds to the proceedings, especially if the country’s finest bass player is in the locality as well!
Steve it was only fabulous to have two of my favourite people playing in the home of the Jury, mind you that drummer ye had for the early numbers looked a bit dodgy – the time keeping was ok but he definitely looked dodgy…
It was a great night and it was mighty to see two of the 3 Wise Men able to make it down to the Delta.
When I get the (promised) images I’ll send them on and there will be no editing!
On the evidence of the closing numbers Paul Callaghan would want to think about packing up that ould photography lark and getting back in behind a kit.
Although Paddy Goodwin has taken the hierarchy to task recently (“Blues For Fr. Iggy) he should know that such a scene of conversion was never previously experienced as that which took place on Sunday 16th March 2008 after himself and the Holy Ghosts took the stage. Thanks also to Paudge & Kevin.
To finish:
That younfella wasn’t bad when he stepped out himself, not sure about the hat, but the playing was fair good.
Maggie XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Jez, it’s all in the “Door Policy”..
Finally, Niall, as a man who throws a fairly mean party yourself your comments have filled me with such joy that I’m immediately heading straight up to Highfield.
p.s. Since Jim Nelis left the city without singing Furniture there is a rumour that we might have to re-call the attendees to an event in November and at the same time celebrate a much more serious birthday………

Sorry to hear the sad news of Jimmy Faulkner's passing. I will always remember him playing with Hotfoot in the 1980's with Pat Collins. But I think that it was his stunning guitar work on Paul Brady's Hard Station album in 1981 that I will always remember most. In particular the best track on the album "Nothing but the same old story" is the best example of his work. May he rest in peace

Hi Niall...Nice to hear from you...
I have played 'Hideaway' (occasionally) 'live' with Steve, over the years..although it didn't become part of the 'liveshow' set on a regular basis...
I recorded 'Hideaway' in manchester in 1992, as part of a 'solo' Blues CD I was working on back then.
All the best...Johnny.

I have seen that Epi. mandobird, you mentioned, Great looking solid body mandolin! It's shape is based on the famous Gibson Firebird...If Johnny Winter were a mandolin player, he would be playing the Epi. mandobird for sure!

Hi Hugh...It's nice to hear from you, and that your interested in learning the Mandolin...
There are quite a number of American/japanese entry/student level mandolins on the market right now that are very reasonably priced...
I would recommend that you check out the Epiphone and Ibanez brands...as both companies cater for the the lower to mid priced mandolin market and both are good quality.
There should plenty available, especially if you live in New York, as is evident from your address below....also, there are plenty of tutor books in all styles of mandolin playing....
Happy hunting...
all the best....Johnny

Hi to Joe Forde...
Great to hear from you as always, and thank you for your kind words. The film I recorded the sountrack for, with Jim Lockhart, is called 'Cre na Cille' and is an Irish language feature film. The acoustic slide guitar is featured in the opening and closing Titles of the movie, and there are incidental slide pieces throughout the movie also. I don't know when the movie is becoming available on DVD, perhaps if you were to check out some info on independant irish films being released this year on DVD, that may be of help, or perhaps someone on Horslips guestbook might be able to help you.
All the best....
Johnny.

Hi Johnny

I would love to hear the music you recently put down as a 'backing track' to a film made in Ireland. There has been a few references to this on the official GB and to your excellent slide playing. Is this film available on DVD as I would like to buy it? If it is not, is there any way this film could be put up on You Tube perhaps? Your slide playing on Roll Back was beautiful-what's more, we don't hear as much of that style these days in modern music alas, and yet is can evoke such a great atmosphere. Just a thought anyhow( back now to my office work!). Kind regards.

Sorry if my enthiusasm and humour has demonstrated a lack of respect. What Niall describes is complete out of context. I suppose it's not given to everyone to be funny. I was trying to put some life on this book. I'll keep well away now.

@Admin, I'd like this to stay till Johnny sees it,then it can be deleted.

Stephen, I've just finished the book and, being old enough to remember the events and times described, was variously riveted, chilled and moved. None of us knows how our story will be told in twenty or thirty years time, or how peculiar twists of fate will interfere with our journeys but your story must resonate particularly with those who are drawn to live music It strikes me that one wonderful band who made the effort to travel this land all those years ago continue to be honoured through these websites, and those who took pleasure from them have an opportunity to celebrate them (with varying degrees of reverence or irreverence) by our various ramblings. Having set down the book an hour or so ago I have searched for a Miami “Guestbook” through which the same affectionate tribute could be paid to you and your friends, from those grumpy old folk like myself who remember seeing them. Does such a possibilty exist?

Hi Keith, I hope you're feeling better now. Thanks for the kind comments on the book. Say hello to "Joni" she's certainly picked a challenging instrument there. John Lennon once described his efforts to learn the Uilleann Pipes as akin to wrestling with an octopus. But Miss Mitchell will tame the beast. Hope to see you soon.
Wednesday January 30 22:10:15 2008 - Miami

Keith Bogue
Steve. Just finished the book. I had started reading it at Christmas but "Joni Mitchell" arived home with a set of Uilleann Pipes and announced that she was going to learn them! So you can imagine the noise in the house since. However due to illness I was confined to the house for a couple of days this week and so out came the book. It is the best book I've read about that sad time in our history and brought back a lot off memories, some good, some bad of those times. Well done. This book should be required reading for the Leaving Cert! Anyway hope all is well with you and hope to see yourself and Johnny soon.

Where are they now: Davey Hall (vocals), Willie Behan & Derek Boston (drums), EJ (guitar)- all played with The Treat at some stage, I believe. And in summer 1985 in Chiswick they had a 16 year old female singer with them too, with a fantastic voice- who was she?

Anyone remember the wake they had for Phil Lynott at The Archway?

Cheers!

Hello Johnny...

The last gig on the gig list is still showing last October... Have you by any chance retired and not told anyone ??? LOL LOL ....

Now let's be serious... I have my cunning plan to organise which follows. We want to plan an Ireland mini trip around one of your gigs, if possible in May, then when I have chosen a gig date, I will try and russle up a couple of people from the other lot and make a bit of a party out of it. And we'll all buy you lots of drinks afterwards...(OK Steve + Blendi too :=).... We hope Maggie would like to join us too.

My question is, how in advance do you know what your gig schedule would be around May ? Is it mainly a short notice kinda thing ?

Thanks and see you soon....

Johnny, I was always a fan of yours, but when I met you a few times in the Archway Tavern around '88-89, I was delighted to find you were a real gentleman too. Also, one night in The Swan in Stockwell, you let my brother, Kevin, try out your Les Paul for size during your break, even though he was plastered. And when you told us about supporting RUSH in '73, I thought he was going to have a stroke 'cos you knew Geddy! We have great memories of seeing you play those nights, and of chatting with one of our Heroes (with a capital H.........sorry!)
Thanks for all of that.

Great to hear from you Eamon. Thanks for your kind comments. Passing on the knowledge from one musician to another, who, in turn, develops it further, is the blood-stream of music. When it stops developing it dies. Keep pushing the envelope. Callan is a beautiful place and I'm sure your playing does it proud. History has only one purpose and that is to teach us. May God keep you in his fretting hand.

hi steve you probally dont even remember me i was that bass player guy from callan who used to turn at your gigs years ago lookin for some fingering tips and you even put up with me calling to your home in carrick on one occasion and your wee lessons have stood me in fine fettle ever since. thank you. just bought your book and it makes a GREAT read as it bears great resemblance to my own humble up bringing in callan, but thats where it ends as the rest of this fantastic story will stay forever in our history books. bless you steve and keep on rockin.

All my best vibes are turned up to Eleven for tomorrow night's gig at the Barge Rooms, Lifford, Ennis with your (and mine) Denver, Colorado friends The Indulgers. I'd give just about anything to be there in the flesh, but I am always (and more this time) there in the spirit. Damien has already said "this promises
to be the highlight of my life to be honest and the plan is to build memories for a lifetime."

Memories...and Stories! Which I know will be shared! Looking very much forward to that...

Yes Alan I second that- it would not have been the same without the presence of Johnny and Maggie, we are grateful they made the long journey up here.
Great to see all the usual suspects again, a night to remember, and Johnny we are enjoying right now the 'Rather Ripped' double cd so kindly handed out by the band.
Good luck on Friday night.

Finished Steve's book last weekend. A good read in the sense that it was a well written piece about a terrible time. I remember the incident well in a sense as a the Da insisted the evening after the news broke that our evening rosary be said for the Miami.

Best wishes Steve and I hope the book has been a kinda release valve.

Hey Johnny, I have a slightly offbeat request. If you remember the words to Back to Tara could you email them to me or post them on here for me? I started playing a song on the guitar the other night and I couldn't remember what it was til I got to the chorus and found myself humming "Back to tara, where the pilgrims still walk the holy way..." Can't remember the rest and it's driving me nuts. I'd liek to play it with the band.

got the book and what can I but I am so sorry you went through that, I have only just got to" the incident". But the start of the book brought me back to Bridge street in 1968 and it is like meeting old friends or my listening to my youth told by some one else. Whatever became of Paul? Gay ,Paul, Margo Meagher, myself and many more used to go roller skating in the Ormomnde Hall/ Billy was in the Cowboys and his sister Ann was always about.. I did chuckle in the start of the book when you said you were into your hair. You always put your hood up on the new Bridge so as not to toss it. and we always called you dainty. Some times I long for those innocent daysof the 60's. I too went through a not as awful experience when I returned to live in Ireland in the Pike but although I thought I would die with my daughter we lived on. It really has been like revisiting my teens with Noel Carrol and all the other.
I can only hope and pray that you dealt with it then and I am so glad you had Anne. We must have passed each other many times in Northolt, Kilburn etc. God looked after you that night or your Father did. Once again I am so sorry

Hi Paul...Great to hear from you and welcome to this guestbook.....I haven't played in the U.S. for many years, but I have great memories of playing ,and staying, in Chicago back in the late seventies...

Thanks Joe, I am very hopeful that our book will be seen as a further step toward reconciliation and, in some small way, might help the healing process that still requires our careful attention. Showbands, Beat-Groups, Ballad-Groups etc were among the greatest "freedom-fighters" of that tragic conflict. Any musician that ever played north of the border during those dark days should hold his or her head high and feel proud that they fought valiantly and always successfully against the common enemy "sectarianism".
The sound of their music will be heard long after the guns have been silenced.

I look forward very much to reading your forthcoming book Steve. I am delighted you have chosen to write this as I am sure it will have rekindled many treasured memories in you, as well as perhaps having a cathartic relevance for you and its readers at a time of such precious peace across the
island of Ireland. The showbands played an important part in Irish popular culture in their heyday, and set the scene for much that was to follow; they knew how to have fun. Good to see you three on breakfast telly too (how did we ever live without You Tube)?

Mighty find .... That Blendi lad! Great gig in Castltgregory, really looking forward to the return on 9th August.

Blendi's playing on the mandolin tunes was only somthing else.
Got a mild touch of neck strain from trying to watch Steve's monouverings around the draining board - aka the neck of that 7 string - during the aforementioned mandolin tunes.
Standout moment JF "leaving" us during The Snakes Farewell".

It was great to see all of the regulars in Drogheda especially

Great show from the three lads last night at a nice venue, The Madison. Watched Live Earth all day but that was just a warm up for the real show. After a soulful and bluesy accoustic set from B and KJ Mac the band took the stage and blazed their way through the classics. Blendi takes our two heros to new heights. A little less Lips this time and sounding better for it. The Zens b-side 'Berlin Wall' and 'Got my Mojo Working' were both special and 'Third Stone from the Sun' made an appearance in, I think, 'Dearg Doom' The real bonus for me was the first live performance I have heard of the brilliant ' Snakes Farewell to the Emerald Isle' and it lived up to expectations. Found out it was written by JF in the mid 70s in a Canadian hotel room. Great title I always thought and I learned later that the man who thought it up was at the gig too, down the back. Step forward the 'other EC', from Ceannanas Mor that is, Mr E. Carr.

Hi guys, thanks for another big night in Drogheda. I enjoyed the surprises: Steve’s new 7 string Bass and him picking out daybreak on the top strings, Johnny on the Berliin Wall and the Snakes and the Mojo track too, and Blendi’s accompaniment giving the mandolin tracks a new dimension. Also good to re-meet the Louth and Cavan gangs and Maggie too.
I’m keeping an eye on the Dongeal dates, esp the outdoor events, to see if I can get some of my kids out. The problem is they tell me I embarrass them. ( I blame their parents for this attitude.)
Thanks again - see yous soon

Hi Rosa, Yes, Tipperary and Kilkenny could certainly be in our sights. I'm from South Tipperary and Kilkenny is just "up the road". I have great memories of The Marble City from my days with Dave Prim, Alan Murphy and James Delaney.

Hi Keith, Hopefully Dave can get down to Ballyshannon for a natter. I haven't seen The Who live for quite some time but I have great memories of jamming with Pino at his (Hamish and Mazzie's) house in Bedford Road, Reading back around '82. He is certainly making his mark now and rightly so.

Steve, ran into Dave Wintour at a gig in Donegal. Told him about the Ballyshannon gig and he says he will try and get down to it if he is not playing. He turned in a great blues set and I had a chat with him after wards about his work with Roger Daltry, who I had seen a couple of weeks earlier in New York playing with some geezer called Townsend and one Pino on the bass. Regards to all, I don't think I will make the Cobblestone gig.

Thank you for your kind comments Steve, but I would never presume to have anything to do with your marvelous career. It was evident even in the early days that you had the dedication and talent to make music your life, while we were struggling with the basic chords. Although I have not seen you perform since the new Miami days, comments from the fortunate people who have seen you and the group play are praise indeed. You deserve the success Best wishes mate. As for me I still struggle with certain chords but my Rickenbacker makes me look the part.!!!!!

Great to talk to ye after too, it was really so cool to meet living legends and two of Ireland's most talented musicians, not forgetting Blendi who was brilliant and a really nice guy too. Thanks for a great night, looking forward to the next one.

I'm delighted to hear from Noel Kelly. For better or for worse, it was Noel who started my performing career! I sincerely hope you're still playing Noel; as Dave Prim and I always considered you a fine guitarist with a rhythm "to die for". You'll remember we would press the headstocks of our guitars against the bedroom door to amplify the sound when we couldn't afford an amplifier! Happy Days with Jesse Walsh, Bear Griffin and The Web at the tennis hops and Forrester's Hall. I learned a lot from you my friend. God bless you. Steve.

I was looking down the guest page here at Keith Bogue's posting about Ennis.
I was wondering did John Williams make it to that festival. As chance would have it I watched The Deer Hunter movie last weekend. I was surprised to see Steve Katz's name among the sound credits. The film was released the same year as the Katz produced The Man Who Built America album.
If you apply bit of Irish logic that makes Robert De Niro the first cousin of Johnny Fean. You know in a certain light from a certain angle…

Hi Keith, It was good to talk to you and Joanie Mitchell after the gig. Dave Wintour is indeed a highly respected bass player. I'm a great admirer of his work. Please pass on my best regards. One hell of a gig in The Bardge Rooms in Ennis on the eve of the Saint Paddy. Great to hear the Zen's Berlin Wall after all these years. Hey guys more of the same. Blendi is settling in, you would swear that he has been playing with the boys for years! Wait till the rest of the gang see him in the big smoke, you are in for a treat. The crowd were up for it and as Paul ( on his way to Sligo! ) will tell you, gave a display of dancing not seen since Horslips played the Astoria Ballroom in Bundoran, circa 1974. Apart from Berlin Wall favorite of the night had to be Snakes Farewell. Maggie, the birthday girl sends a big hello. Steve as usual in great form. By the way Steve that Bass player Dave Wintour, who now lives in Donegal, played on the TOMMY soundtrack as well as Daltrey's solo albums. He is also credited on the WHO'S magic bus album, plus Chicken Shack, Steerlers Wheeel etc, etc. I enjoyed our chat after the show as did the daughter.

Hi Johnny - I tried to contact you a year or two ago via the site but I think it might have got lost in the many messages you seem to get these days. I am writing from Sydney where I now live and remember well the Saturday nights going to the Archway Tavern in London to see The Treat. Dave, Danny and yourself were the best part of my week for a long long time before I went to Australia. I particularly remember the first gig you did with The Treat when Eric Bell (Thin Lizzy) had been playing for months before that and then suddenly you appeared. Dave Hall had such a grin on his face when he introduced you but we had already recognized you and were screaming with delight at Eric's replacement - no disrespect to Eric but what a treat it was indeed!. I'm glad you got the Horslips back together for the short while over the last couple of years as we talked so much about it during that time but as I missed it all by being on this side of the world I can only make do with the DVDs, CDs and the odd YouTube Videos etc. :) - The acoustic versions of the songs on the new album are amazing. Please please write something new togther!! Do you remember when I had to loan you a cassette of "Short Stories Tall Tales" so you could remember how "Guests of the Nation" went...? It soon become a big number with The Treat when you brought it into the set. Anyway, I hope yourself and Maggie are well and that life on the road with Steve is as magical as ever for you. If you ever find yourself over this part of the world please look me up as I spent years as an agent here and know a good few gigs you could play. Take care!

Frequent visitors may have noticed that this message board occasionally misbehaves and appears to loose chunks of messages. Investigations point to a parsing problem in old messages in the system's backup/restore files. The good news is the guest book backs itself up every day so we shouldn't loose much information in a crash. It is possible that we'll loose messages if we have a crash before a back-up. Apologies if you find your message is lost. Hopefully we can sort out the problem soon.

That Ennis International Guitar Festival event looks like one to watch. I was looking on-line and see that John Williams is going along. He must be one of the great names in Classical Guitar, but the only piece of his I know is Cavatina. I'm sure I've heard him on radio doing some Beatles stuff though.

While I'm here I want to mention Conor McAloon. I met him while he was gigging at Xmas in omagh. He told me he had a self penned guitar composition on his myspace. I found it. It's a lovely piece called Anaroore! Not a million miles away from what Williams might play. It sounds very fresh and surely worth a listen! I found it by googling for Conor McAloon and clicking the myspace link.
I'd have left him a message there, but I've no myspace account, so he can read this message when he checks in.

Anyway Johnny and Steve good luck with that Ennis Guitar Festival gig!

Steve,.belated happy birthday.
Really really enjoyed 'Blondie ' from the 'Dawn of The Crack' (from the sample play) also 'The Dedication' is very doo-wop, just as I like it.

Looking forward to Johnny and Steve at the Cherry Tree in Walkinstown in a few weeks time, haven't heard them in a while so must be getting withdrawal symptoms, maybe should go on YouTube now ..[http://www.youtube.com/results?search
_query=Johnny+Fean&search=Search] for a quick burst of the duo to be going on with.
My wishlist for additions to their playlist ( if I might be so bold) would be...
'I Am The One'... just to hear that played live, what a great song.
'Whiskey In The Jar'.. for the memory of Phil Lynott.
'A New Day Yesterday' or 'Cross-Eyed Mary' or ANYTHING Tull.
What would others like to hear, I'm sure it would be of interest to our bize ?

Monday January 1 22:37:50 2007 - nw ireland

Hi Johnny & Steve. Thanks indeed for all the gigs a craic in 2006. My car mechanic sends his fond regards too, and he asks to make sure you keep the gigs coming again this year.
I've been at a few "local" gigs this week: The Rory Gallagher tribute in the Ulster Hall on Friday and then Omagh for Horlypse on Sat night. Johnny's version of Shakin' all over was played on both nights. I took the family to the panto in the Waterfront in Belfast ( In the smaller studio hall) on Thursday evening. I heard Steve was due to be up there one night. I wonder were we in the building at the same time?
Anyway, I'll add my good wishes to those of my mechanic and wish you both and Maggie, & people I've got to know through your music, a great year for 2007.
